Mowry Baden
Contemporary (post 1945) Sculpture
(Los Angeles, CA, January 17, 1936 - )
Mowry Baden is an alumni of Pomona College in California, where he was a member of the class of '58. He later served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Chair of the Pomona Art department (1968-69). He was born in Los Angeles, earned an MA from Stanford University and then worked at the Berkeley, Oakland and San Diego Museums of Contemporary Art. From 1975, he has taught at the University of Victoria in Canada.
A maker of objects whose interest lies in the physical and perceptual interaction between viewer and work of art, Baden constructs interactive pieces that incorporate bodily participation. Overlapping interests in sculpture, architecture, and social science reveal themselves in a concern with social and political, as well as artistic, issues.
Many of his sculptures are "task-oriented" objects and having two lives, are both sculptures unto themselves and props in performance art.
