Painter, printmaker, and stained glass artist Heinrich Campendonk was born in Krefeld, Germany on November 3, 1889. He originally intended to be a textile designer, studying at the Fachschule fur Textilindustrie and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krefeld from 1905-9. Franz Marc and Vassily Kandinski learned of his work, however, and in 1911, invited Campendonk to join their Expressionist group "Der Blaue Reiter." His work appeared in the first Blaue Reiter exhibition in Munich in 1911 and was published in their almanac of the same name.
