Giorgio di Chirico was born in Volos, Greece on July 10, 1888. He studied at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Athens from 1903-5, and after moving to Munich in 1906, studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunst. There, he was influenced by the work of Max Klinger and Arnold Bflcklin. He left the Akademie in 1910, going to Florence, where he began studying the philosophy of Frederik Nietzsche. This inspired di Chirico to create enigmatic images that penetrated and defamiliarized common objects. Incorporating mythological figures, he altered perspective by using high walls and receding arcades to isolate and reorder space.
