Elaine de Kooning was born in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania on March 12, 1920. She studied at Hunter College, later transferring to the Leonardo da Vinci Art School in Manhattan. She later transferred again to the American Artists School. She became a student of Willem de Kooning in the late 1930s; they were married on December 9, 1943. Her husband's work, and the work of other Abstract Expressionists, had an important influence on Elaine de Kooning's art.
