(London, England, September 16, 1818 - June 1, 1910, Alresford, England)
Sir Francis Seymour Haden was born in London in 1818. He was educated at University College, London, and at the Sorbonne, studying medicine at both places. He became a famous surgeon, and practiced medicine all his life. At the urging of his brother-in-law, James A. McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), he took up etching seriously in 1858 at the age of forty. He continued to etch for the rest of his life, both for enjoyment and as a means of relaxation from the strains of surgery. Although the two brothers-in-law strongly disliked each other, their prints share many stylistic similarities.
