Johan Jongkind was born at Latrop, near Rotterdam, on June 3,1819. The now noted marine and landscape painter and etcher went to Paris in 1846 to work with Eugene Isabey. The Salon rejected many of his pictures, and in 1952 awarded him only the third-class medal. But he won recognition from such men as Baudelaire, Burty and Marmontel.
