Pot, after 1964
4 3/4 x 5 7/8 x 5 7/8 in. (12.07 x 14.92 x 14.92 cm)
There are several pieces of correspondence in the object file written between John Parker or his wife and Popovi Da of the Studio of Indian Arts, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The letter from Popovi Da to Mrs. John Parker, dated May 20, 1965, reads, in part: "The very early pieces made by Maria and decorated by Julian, were signed only by Maria alone as MARIE. In or about 1934 the signing of pots of theirs began with the signing of both names such as Marie & Julian. This was continued until the time of Julian's passing away which was in the year of 1943. Shortly thereafter, our sister-in-law Sanana took over decorating our mother's pieces, and again the signing of pottery changed to Marie & Santana. In 1956, I, took over or became a close partner as Julian, in the decorating and firing of Maria's pottery, and thus the begining [sic] of having her sign the plain undecorated pots with Maria-Pove'ka, and the decorated ones with Maria-Popovi. About three years ago we began dating our pottery such as shown on your recent purchased piece. Now the Maria & Santana potttery which one finds so much of is questioned by us. But your early Marie & Santana, could be without question a truly Maria made pot."
A letter written by Popovi Da to John Parker and dated December 7, 1965 reads, in part: "The formerly known Maria & Popovi pieces are now under the name of POPOVI. Because I have now taken on the responsibility of continueing [sic] with our family tradition of pottery making. My mother still helps, but in a very limited manner, and thus leaving me with the major portion of the making."
"POPOVI / 965" signed into the clay on underside.
A white label adhered to underside is handwritten in black ink, "3701".
