Commentary
Lt. General Foertsch signs surrender papers: Lt. General Foertsch, Commanding General of German First Army (center), signs papers at Professor Thorak’s studio outside of Munich, Germany, May 5. Papers are the unconditional surrender of German Army Group “G” to American forces under command of General Jacob L. Devers, Commanding General Sixth Army Group. Looking on at right is Brigadier General Pearson Menoher, Chief of Staff of U.S. 15th Corps. Two German officers (left) and the American officer (second from right) are unidentified, May 1945.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
