Commentary
Army repels "invaders" in a test of New England Defenses, Plattsburg, N.Y.: The mechanized unit moves to the front in the largest peacetime war maneuvers ever staged by the U.S. Army in Upstate New York. These tanks and infantry belong to the 1st Division – the “Blue” army of New York State defenders. The “Black” army consists of 35,000 National Guardsmen. It was driven back by an outnumbered force of 10,000 regulars yesterday in a sham war, during which the Guards mythically swept down from New England and attempted to break into Upstate New York, August 1939.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
