Wenceslaus Hollar

(Prague, Czechoslovakia, July 23, 1607 - March 25, 1677, London, England)

Queen Henrietta Maria of France, Queen of England, 1641
Etching on paper
6 1/8 x 4 5/8 in. (15.56 x 11.75 cm)

Creation Place: Europe, Czech
Technique: Etching
Credit Line: Pomona College Collection, Dr. Lucille M. Paris Fund
Accession Number: P2021.7.1

Provenance
Parthey 1537. Purchased from C. G. Boerner by the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College on May 17, 2021. Gustav Friedrich Konstantin Parthey (1798-1872) (Lugt 2014).

Dimensions
Sheet: 8 7/8 x 6 5/8

Commentary
Hollar never finished the plate for this print (the second state merely has the number 13 added to lower right). The fact that he left it purposely unfinished can be read as an hommage to van Dyck and his celebrated - and mostly unfinished - portrait etchings.

Marks
Etched into bottom right corner of image: "Ant: van dyck pincit, W. Hollar fecit, / 1641".

All inscriptions and stamps on verso:
"Henrietta Maria" handwritten in graphite below the bottom edge of the plate mark.
"G. PARTHEY [enclosed in an oval]" stamped in black ink near left side of bottom edge of sheet.
Three initials, "PM[illegible]", enclosed in an oval stamped in black ink to right of the Parthey stamp.
"Bornar [illegible letters] 1853 / P. 1537 moo." handwritten in graphite in bottom left corner of sheet.
"7577" handwritten in graphite in upper right corner of sheet.
"1823" handwritten in graphite in upper right corner of plate mark.

Edition
New Hollstein 342 first state (of two)
