On verso: Newspaper cutting affixed near center with the printed caption, "AP Wirephoto / THIS WAS THE INTEGRATED LUNCHEON IN MONTGOMERY, ALA. / Visiting white students and professor were jailed". Stamped in purple ink on newspaper cutting: "S APR 1960 2". Handwritten in graphite up bottom left edge: "CVL-AL-318 2500". Handwritten in purple ink in upper right corner: "Negroes-Segregation-Alabama". The word "Negroes" is crossed out in red ink, and the word "BLACKS" is written in red ink under it. Partial stamp in black ink is at center bottom edge. Stamped in blue ink is: "STAR CUT ORDER / Subject [handwritten in graphite] Lunch / Size [handwritten in graphite] 3 col. x 4 3/4". Blue ink stamp to the left of the newspaper cutting reads: "ENGRAVING [most of stamp covered] / 41".

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.

Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
