Commentary
Rap Brown Convicted on Holdup Charge: Former black militant leader H. Rap Brown (above) and three co-defendants were convicted of the holdup of a New York City bar Thursday. The jury was unable to agree on charges that the four attempted to murder police in a gun battle following the holdup. The four were also convicted of assault against a patrolman who was injured in the gun battle. H. Rap Brown (1943-present) was the fifth Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s. During a short-lived (six months) alliance between SNCC and the Black Panther Party, he served as their Minister of Justice. Brown is perhaps most famous for his proclamations during that period that "violence is as American as cherry pie" and that "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down."

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
