Commentary
Makes Statement On School Row: Oliver C. Carmichael, President of the University of Alabama, makes a statement to the press in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that black student Autherine Lucy has been suspended for her own safety. The white students of the school demonstrated against the black her.

Autherine Lucy (b. October 5, 1929) was the first black student to attend the University of Alabama, in 1956. Her expulsion from the university led to President Oliver Carmichael's resignation.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
