Commentary
King Aide Shows Where Fatal Shot Hit: Reverend Andrew Young, an aide to Dr. Martin Luther King in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, shows where Dr. King was hit by an assassin's bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. Young was waiting in the St. Joseph's Hospital emergency room for news of King's condition. Andrew Young (1932-present) is an American politician, diplomat, and activist. Young was an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He was a close confidant of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On recto: typewritten title and date. On verso: manuscript title, date and newspaper stamp.
Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
