Looking For a Home: While Charlayne Hunter, 18, awaits assignment of dormitory space by the University of Georgia Dean of Women, Hamilton Holmes, 19, peers through the door at newsmen. The two students virtually completed registration today, after the univerity was compelled by court order to admit them. They are scheduled to become the first blacks to attend the 175-year-old university tomorrow.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault (b. 1942) is an award-winning journalist and former foreign correspondent for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service. She and Hamilton E. Holmes were the first two black students admitted to the University of Georgia.

Hamilton E. Holmes (July 8, 1941 – October 26, 1995) was an American orthopedic physician. He and Charlayne Hunter-Gault were the first two black students admitted to the University of Georgia. Additionally, Holmes was the first black student to attend the Emory University School of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. in 1967. Holmes later became a professor of orthopedics and associate dean at the school.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
