Commentary
Joins AMA Staff: Dr. Effie O. Ellis, 52, became Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President of the American Medical Association today, Chicago. She is the only black person to hold an administrative or executive position within the AMA. In her job, Dr. Ellis will try to do something about extending more health care to the poor. She was formerly Director of Maternal and Child Health of Ohio.

Dr. Effie O'Neal Ellis (1913-1994) was a Northside Chicago pediatrician, child medical care consultant, and activist for infant health and maternal education. Ellis was the first black woman to hold an executive position in the American Medical Association. In 1989, Ellis was inducted to the Chicago Women's Hall of Fame for her efforts to improve lives in the black community and for helping to lower infant mortality rates.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
