Commentary
Mayor Tours Scene of Violence: Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. walks past a group of black youths while touring a black neighborhood in Atlanta after sporadic violence early Sunday morning. They Mayor, followed by several policemen, urged the black people to return to their homes.

In 1966, Atlanta erupted in race riots resulting from a century of black oppression. Ivan Allen (1911-2003) was an American businessman who served two terms as the 52nd Mayor of Atlanta, during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Allen provided pivotal leadership for transforming the segregated and economically-stagnant Old South into the progressive New South.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
