To Continue Fight: Autherine Lucy is the black coed expelled from the University of Alabama. After a federal judge ordered her reinstated in classes this week, Lucy told newsmen that she will continue her fight for readmittance. "I am completely disheartened," she said, but added that she told lawyers to "take whatever steps necessary" to secure readmission to the Tuscaloosa, Alabama school. Lucy is at a news conference at NAACP headquarters with Roy Wilkins, NAACP Executive Secretary.

Autherine Lucy (October 5, 1929 - present) was the first black student to attend the University of Alabama, in 1956. Her expulsion from the university led to President Oliver Carmichael's resignation.

Roy Wilkins (1901-1981) was an instrumental figure in Congress' passing of the Civil Rights Acts of the 1950s and 1960s, and was one of the key leaders in organizing the historic March on Washington. Additionally, Wilkins helped to oversee a rise in National Association for the Advancement of Colored People membership from 25,000 members in the 1930s to more than 400,000 by the 1970s.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
