Explorer Visits President: President Dwight Eisenhower and Matthew Henson, 88-year-old black man from New York, stand at a White House globe with Mrs. Henson today as they talk over an event of 45 years ago. On April 6, 1909, Henson reached the North Pole as a member of Robert E. Peary's expedition. Henson is the last survivor of the group of six men who planted the Stars and Stripes on the pole.

Marks
On verso: manuscript date, Associated Press stamp and typewritten label with title and date affixed.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
