Commentary
In depicting the Moors as enthusiastic bullfighters, Goya follows Moratin's text. It has been noted that these figures' costumes are similar to those worn by Napoleon's Egyptian mercenaries ("Marmelukes"). If this is so, the conception of the image postdates the French invasion of Spain in 1808.
