Commentary
In contrast to the flamboyant Pepe IIlo, Pedro Romero was a classical matador known for his preference for facing the bull alone. He killed his last bull at the age of eighty, and it was said that not one of the nearly five thousand bulls he fought left a mark on him. Goya has set the antagonists in a ring flooded with sunlight, selecting a still moment of confrontation as Romero prepares for the kill.
