Commentary
Pepe Illo, the most famous matador in Seville, was also the author La Touromaquia, an important document on the art of the bullfight in which he describes the scene shown here. Illo makes the suerte de recorte, a flourish of the cape that confuses the bull, forcing it to "curtsy." In turn, Illo bows to the animal whose wild eyes reflect its fear.
