Commentary
The picador Fernando del Toro was renowned in Goya's youth, between 1760 and 1770; Goya could have seen him fight in Zaragoza in 1767. Shown in a temporary moment of calm, the bull is clearly outlined against a light ground. Behind him, the two shadowy figures must have been etched, rubbed out, and corrected but never completed.
