Commentary
Ceballos, called "The Indian," may have been born in Argentina and first received attention as a bullfighter in Buenos Aires in 1722. Goya probably saw him fight in Pamplona in 1775. In order to place the short sword or dagger shown here, the metador was forced to lean precariously from his horse and over the horns of the bull to hit his mark.

Goya etched this first and then smoothed it out to get the white highlights. (Armin Kunz, C.G. Boerner, Feb 28 - March 3, 2022)
