Commentary
Returning to his documentation of legendary moments in the history of the bullfight, Goya depicts an uncommon sight: a female matador. Nicolasa Escamilla was renowned in Goya's youth in Zaragoza as La Pajuelera, a nickname derived from the fact that she was a vendor of Pajuelas, or sulphur -tipped matches. In preparatory drawing for this etching, Goya shows her with more feminine features and attire, and this is probably not a reliable portrait. Nonetheless, the artist clearly admired her confidence and control of the bull.
