Commentary
As in the previous plate, Goya depicts here as historical figure: Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (ca. 1040-1099). The Spanish soldier and hero known as El Cid Compeador. Considered the prototype of the noble Castilian warrior, his chivalry and exploits have been romanticized since the 11th century.
