This image, based on Moratin's text, records the day in 1527 when Hapsburg king Charles V (1500-58) killed a bull in the city of Valladolid with a single thrust of the lance in celebration of the birth of his son Phillip II. The king on horseback and the bull are presented as a single triangular mass centered against an abstract background. The dramatic, diagonal fall of light romanticizes the image and suggests Goya's admiration for the king's virtuosity.
Plate: 9 3/4 x 13 3/4.
