The use of banderillas (barbed darts) as a stage of the bullflight was attributed to the Moors. Remarkable in this image is the dignified stance of the bull, isolated against a light background. Goya's frequent portrayal of the bull as a noble creature contrasts sharply with popular images of his day. Although enamored of the bullfight, of which he was an aficionado, the artist also had reservations about its brutality. Here, as in other later images in the series, he seems to question the assumed superiority of man over beast.
