Commentary
Here, Goya suggests that the use of the cape was a Moorish invention; this contradicts contemporary legend as the movement shown, the suerte de espaldas, was associated with the flamboyant style of the famed matador of Goya's time, Pepe Illo. Setting the action within a ring, with stands and spectators' heads visible in the background, Goya uses a compositional device that will be further developed in many of the prints that follow.
