Conical basket hat with flat base, made with coiled construction. Black and orange stripe on buff. Used as a hat; carrying net made of braided water fern is attached.

juncus, deer grass, sumac, agave and water fern
Commentary
When Cahuilla and other groups in southern California used nets for carrying budens on their backs, they wore special hats connected to the net for protection. -from the Native American Art from the Permanent Collection catalog, 1976
