willow stem and sumac
An Apache, Ute, or Paiute, rather than a Navajo basketmaker produced this traditionally colored reddish-brown and black Navajo "wedding basket." THe balck results from a misture of coal, sumac leaves, and resin; the reddish-brown form a mixture of mountain majogany, juniper roots, and alder bark.
