Commentary
Blackfoot women wore belts that combined beaded designs and areas covered with brass tacks, creating a patter known as panel belts. It is likely that the exposed buckskin sections on this belt were once covered with brass tacks. This belt has characteristics of both early Crow and Blackfoot beadwork. It is similar to Crow work in the use of dark blue to border the design panels and the insertion of vivid red throughout. However it also shares the color palette characteristic of Blackfoot beadwork--blue, red, pink, and green, although usually placed on light color backgrounds. It is not easy to identify a specific piece as the work of an artist from a particular tribal group because Plains peoples met in large summer camps for festivals where designs, as well as objects, were traded. This is a practice that continues today.
