Commentary
Deeply pleated red curtains open to reveal a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary dressed in a highly embroidered garment. This advocation of the Virgin features the rosary in her right hand. According to sources dating as early as the 15th century, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Dominic (after 1170–1221) and offered him this form of meditative aid. Although the saint figures at lower left and right cannot be identified due to their lack of attributes, they are likely members of the Dominican order given the Dominican affinity for prayer with a rosary and also its garments of capuces (hoods) and scapulars (cloths worn over the shoulders).
