Commentary
Mogollon culture, Mimbres phase. Birds and serpents are often found on Mimbres pots. They are design motifs based on Mesoamerican mythology. A version of these motifs is seen in the depiction of a centipede and two birds on this piece. The birds represented combine characteristics of two different species, the turkey and the roadrunner. This was a common practice in Mimbres art, which often suggested the supernatural or mythic nature of the animal depicted (Brody, 1977, p. 195).
