Commentary
Design motifs in most Western Apache baskets dating after the 1880s are very complex. The sun motif in the center of this example is traditional, as is the checkered band, which is called "beads." The human figures wearing headdresses represent gan dancers; representations of horses, dogs, and unspecific quadrupeds. In a departure from tradition, human and animal figures and crosses were incorporated into Western Apache baskets intended both for sale and for native use.
