Commentary
This series of etchings is based upon the question of how Goya's work would have looked had he traveled in time to the present days and portrayed our world in his own classic style. These prints are an attempt to answer such questions rather than compete with the Old Master. This is a tribute to his art as well as a distanced look into the complexities of our contemporary society. Humor is the triumph of pleasure over pain; it is a defense mechanism and not a way of trivializing atrocities. Enrique Chagoya
Object Description
Contemporary etching and aquatint by Enrique Chagoya. In the print here, inspired by the 18th century print by Francisco de Goya of the same title, "De que mal morira" (What illness will he die from?), Chagoya substitutes the dying man in the original with the likeness of Fidel Castro. The original image reflects Goya's disdain for doctors by portraying the physicial at the dying man's bedside as a donkey.
