These works illustrate an idealized relationship between the water and the modern city in the Belle Époque. Haussmann-era buildings, with the medieval Notre-Dame Cathedral deliberately hidden from view, appear stacked behind a bridge that crosses the Seine River. The floating lantern was inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which often included a motif of water in a rapidly urbanizing environment.
