Commentary
Label for "Parisian Ecologies: The City Transformed in Nineteenth-Century Prints and Drawings" March 24 - June 25, 2022After the fall of the Second Empire, the Third Republic (1870–1914) was characterized by relative stability, gradual increases in industry, and continued struggles regarding national identity and class structures. In this etching, Buhot depicts the celebration of a national holiday on June 30 (officially moved to July 14 or “Bastille Day” in 1880) on the Boulevard Clichy in his neighborhood of Montmartre, from which he often drew inspiration. The artist is known for his remarque (border), which suggests multiple events and timeframes, and how he incorporated the rural—such as horses and pets—into the urbanized city.
