Commentary
Happy about Victory: sponsors of the jury trial amendment to the Civil Rights bill---Senators Frank Church, (D-ID), left; Joseph C. O'Mahoney (D-WY), second from left; and Estes Kefauver (D-TN), right---get in victory handshakes with Senate majority leader Lyndon Johnson (D-TX), center, and Richard Russell (D-GA), second from right, after the amendment passed by a vote of 51-42 in a late session last night. Adoption of the amendment was a major blow to President Eisenhower's administration-backed bill, Washington DC.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
