"My interest in urban interventions started in 1966, at the very beginning of my work in visual poetry. That year I created, with the assistance of Annalisa Alloatti, the sequence MONUMENT (MONUMENTO), which was first published in 1968 by De Luca. It is one of my very first works, and the first story ever to be built with a single word and its fragments. It is not only the contestation of monumentality as rhetoric and fetishism, but also the revelation of rhetoric and fetishism as "monumentality" in all fields (art, poetry, politics). The "monument" is visualized with the letters of the Italian word itself ("monumento") throught the verbal suggestions contained within it: "nume" (=godlike); "me non tu" (=me not you); "mento" (=I am mutating); "temo" (=I fear). It is a structure of transformation: the monument recognizes its non-communicative nature; it doubts; it falls; it mutates; it fears change; it becomes pure rhythm."
