Aquatic creatures like the frog, the fish, and the turtle in this example, are frequent motifs in Mimbres art. It has been suggested that these creatures relate to Southwestern mythological traditions. In the creation myths of the Zuni, these creatures became the original Kachinas, or rainmakers.
