Marks
Tag attatched to interior has wrinting on both sides. The front of the tag reads: "This / belonged / to 'Old / Mary' / well known / in Yosemite". Back of tag reads: "Burden / Basket / from / Yosemite / Valley 1898 / Forbes".

Provenance
This belonged to Old Mary, a Miwok woman, near Yosemite, California. Collected in 1898.vBailey to CUC.

Commentary
Collected in 1898, this basket was used by a Miwok woman to transport elderberries she sold to tourists at Yosemite. It is of a type that was conventionally used for carrying acorns.
