In the 1880s, Cheyenne beadbook was characterized by a growing compleity, which contrasted to the geometric simplicaity of earlier designs. A new motif, the stepped triangle, was often used during the later part of the 19th century. At this time, the traditional monochromatic painting of portions of the hide not covered with beadwork continued.
