Ellipsoidal jug with a cylindrical neck and a loop handle attached to the neck and body. Snowflake black and Tularosa black on white ware, White Mountain series. Black and white fret band on neck. Black and white curvilinear band on the main body.
Materials
Grey clay, white slip, and black paint
Commentary
Snowflake black-on-white style. Very fine black-on-white pottery was produced in the Puerco River area of Northwestern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona. Many of the designs feature an interplay of angular and curvilinear (usually interlocking scrolls) elements, and the balancing of solid and hatched areas (Cat. No. 136). The design often includes a sharp differentiation between neck and body banding. Animal forms appear both in stylized and semi-realistic effigy vessels and in sculptured additions to the necks of jars.
