Commentary
The Sioux beadwork format originally consisted of simple geometric patterns, often including isosceles triangles, worked on a light ground. Blue and red on a white ground were the most frequently used combinations. After the 1870s, Sioux design became much more complex (Cat. No. 249). Lazy stitching is the most widely used technique in Sioux work. The patterns of the beadwork on leggings, in contrast to the decoration of dresses (Cat. No. 135) is usually more complex (Wissler, 1904, p. 253).
