Soft buckskin baby carrier with a tie closing. Narrow vertical strips of quillwork in red, with purple near the bottom and white and green near the top. Elaborate design completely covers the top in narrow red quillwork bands. Edged with red, white, and blue beadwork bands.

Commentary
Glass beads and brilliantly-dyed quills are combined on this outstanding example of late 19th-century Sioux decoratve art. Narrow red lines were frequently used both in Sioux quillwork and beadwork. The triangular motifs on the top of the hood are a variation of the turtle design. The Sioux believed that the turtle had protective power over the diseases of infancy (Wissler, 1904, p. 241). The baby's umbilical cord was saved as a protective talisman and kept in a small turtle-shaped beaded leather container.
