This series of etchings is based upon the question of how Goya's work would have looked had he traveled in time to the present days and portrayed our world in his own classic style. These prints are an attempt to answer such questions rather than compete with the Old Master. This is a tribute to his art as well as a distanced look into the complexities of our contemporary society. Humor is the triumph of pleasure over pain; it is a defense mechanism and not a way of trivializing atrocities.

Enrique Chagoya

Contemporary etching and aquatint by Enrique Chagoya. Inspired by the most famous of Goya's Caprichos, “El sueno de la razon produce monstruos” (The Sleep of Reason produces monsters), shows the artist sleeping amid a flurry of owls and bats symbolizing the dark forces of ignorance and superstition.

Chagoya's print substitutes missiles, bombers and helicopters for Goya's nocturnal animals, casting militarism as today's expression of the sleep of reason.
