Commentary
Native American woven beadwork developed from earlier fiber-weaving techniques, adapted to and influenced by European trade goods. The commonly used term, "loom" beadwork, actually refers to a number of techniques that differ among tribal groups, only some of which make use of looms. Experimentation likely led to the adoption of certain techniques and the abondonment of others. Visually rich beadwork sashes, such as this example, integrated traditional motifs with the possibilities of new materials and techniques.
