Commentary
Beaded men's garters, ornamental rather than functional, were tied outside the leggings below the knees. Winnebago women produced sashes and garters from yarns they finger wove on heddle looms. This technique offered greater portability, versatility, and efficiency than other weaving techniques. The resulting warp-faced woven pieces were composed of variegated stripes determined by the color of the yarn used for the warp. The geometricized floral motif is similar to the woven beadwork patterns of other Great Lakes tribes at this time, but the color combination is typically Winnebago.
