Northern Paiute (Paviotso) Artist
Basket Water Bottle, c. 1900
Wood and pitch
x 1 3/16 in. ( x 3 cm)
willow stem, sapwood, piñon pitch
Paiute water jars are coated with pitch on both the interior and exterior. The only decorative element of this jar is the orange color of the red ochre on the exterior. In the household, a jar of this size would probably have been used for storing water.
